If you’ve recently purchased a theme, you’re probably wondering how you can make it your own and easily customize your WordPress blog. Tech doesn’t have to get in the way of customizing your blog. Try these seven customization changes. They are so easy a cave man can do it!

In fact, many themes have built in frameworks that allow you to make changes to your blog’s appearance. Premium WordPress blog themes tend to be more customizable, let’s be honest, that’s why you’re paying a premium, but there are even a few ways to change the look and feel of a free WordPress theme or a blogger theme.
7 Easy Peasy Blog Customizations for WordPress and Blogger
- Add a Favicon – A favicon is an icon associated with your URL that is displayed in a browser’s address bar or next to the site name in a bookmark list. This is an extremely small image. Mine is a small heart. Your’s can include one letter or even a small box or circle with your logo or mascot in it.
- Change Your Blog Colors – WordPress users, first, check to see if there are any options to change the colors of your blog inside of theme options. If not, the option may be within customization. This is usually the quickest and easiest way to customize your blog.
- Add Your Submark – Your submark is a variation of your logo. You may see these in a circular format and used on items like Pinterest Photos. Mine is placed on the homepage of my blog. It’s the focal point of the full header image and when you scroll over it, the submark rotates to the right.
- Add Your logo – Most people know what a logo is, but I’ll indulge you. Your logo is an image or font combination that helps people quickly identify your brand from someone else’s. This can include a fun mascot of just a distinct combination or fonts or artwork.
- Add Your Signature – Why not add your signature at the end of each blog post? I do this for helloambi.com. I created my signature in Photoshop and I saved it as a photo file. I use a widget to make sure this is placed at the end of every post on my blog.
- Add New Photos – If you haven’t swapped out the photos from your theme, chances are your blog looks just like the next gals. Take the time to buy quality stock images and replace your out of the box theme photos with these. If you are looking for great quality photos, check out pixistock.
- Add a Unique Menu – Most websites have the same boring menus listed at the top (or bottom) of their blog. Be creative. label your menu items something different and memorable. For example, instead of “Contacts”, try “Chat With Me” or instead of “About Me” try something like “Get to Know Me”
Pro Tip: You want to make sure you backup your website before you make any customizations. Also, if you are using a self-hosted WordPress theme, be sure to make any changes in the child theme and not the parent theme. If your blog doesn’t come with a child theme, use the Child Theme Configurator plugin to create one or hire a web developer on fiverr to make you one. If you make changes to the parent theme, they will may be removed and possibly even lost when you update the theme.
These are super easy ways to customize your blog, no matter what blogging platform you may be using. This makes for a really fun #weekendwarrior project. Go for it!
